Geotechnical engineering is a discipline within civil engineering that focuses on the behavior of natural geological materials in engineered systems. Geotechnical engineers recognize that soil and rock are the cheapest and most abundant building materials on Earth, and consequently play a major role in the construction and performance of every type of civil engineering structure. To be successful in the field of geotechnical engineering, students should have broad exposure to civil engineering, with advanced knowledge and coursework in geology, soil and rock mechanics, slope stability, foundation engineering and computational mechanics.
Geotechnical Engineer is a specialist who uses fundamental principles of soil and rock mechanics to investigate surface and subsurface conditions of the ground. This allows them to evaluate, design, analyze and construct works related to the stability of natural slopes, man-made soil deposits, earthworks with cuts and fills, shallow and deep foundations, dams, retaining walls, tunnels, bridges, underground structures and many other works directly interacting with subsoil and water. Besides this, they are also involved in ground improvement and modification schemes, liquefaction analysis, geoenvironmental studies, foundation failure studies, grouting and mitigation methods, railway and highway embankment designs, landfill site design and dynamic analysis of soil/ foundations etc. to name a few.
The course roadmap below will help you in planning your academics and
give you an overview of each upcoming semester.
Some of the many career options for you to choose from.
Ample job opportunities are available for Geotechnical Engineers in both Government and Private sectors. In the government sector, job opportunities exist with PWD, urban planning departments, National Highway Authority of India, Indian Railways, Metro Rail Corporations etc. and the private sector includes consultancy firms, construction companies, mining agencies and infrastructure development companies. Otherwise, starting a consultancy firm is also a good opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer in which they can cater to various clients such as builders, infrastructure developers, and Government agencies.
